Advocate for literacy and civic learning: Use local and state newspapers

Posted

Lisa Lord will receive the Dave Jones award in February 2015 at the NC Press awards ceremony. She and other Dave Jones award recipients answer the question:

What motivates teachers to dedicate time on a regular basis to having students read and discuss current local and state news?

The recipients demonstrate how reading news and information from local and regional NC newspapers promote the reading habit, engage students with content on multiple subjects, build background knowledge and strengthen students’ connections with their communities.

Cynthia McFadden, the first recipient of the Dave Jones, has continued to inspire and support teaching with news.  She has contributed lessons for the NC NIE website; she develops and shares comprehension tests for each week’s Mini Page.  She has offered and evaluated teaching ideas for special projects, such as N.C. of Note and serial stories. To find lessons she developed and made available through NC NIE,  visit /how-news-connects/.

To learn what she was able to accomplish with her students in 12 to 15 minutes, read her story: (/2009-dave-jones-winner-cynthia-mcfadden/)

Lisa Lord, 5th grade teacher at Club Boulevard Humanities Magnet Elementary School in Durham, was chosen the Dave Jones Award recipient for classroom work during the 2013-2014 school year. Her students read the day’s newspaper each morning. Read her story to find out how she models note-taking and structures discussions and writing assignments. Stories about all recipients of the Dave Jones Award for the Development of Youth Readership appear on the site. Thanks to all recipients for their dedication to teaching and learning and integration of local and state news into instruction. Democracy requires an informed citizenry, and their work embodies the “civic mission of schools.”

On the bottom left of the front page, you will find the application (fillable and pdf) for the 2014-2015 school year. (/) Teachers, complete and return the application and/or forward the application to educators who integrate local and state news into their instruction and encourage them to apply.
