Advocate for literacy and civic learning: Use local and state newspapers
Lisa Lord will receive the Dave Jones award in February 2015 at the NC Press awards ceremony. She and other Dave Jones award recipients answer the question:
What motivates teachers to dedicate time on a regular basis to having students read and discuss current local and state news?
The recipients demonstrate how reading news and information from local and regional NC newspapers promote the reading habit, engage students with content on multiple subjects, build background knowledge and strengthen students’ connections with their communities.
Cynthia McFadden, the first recipient of the Dave Jones, has continued to inspire and support teaching with news. She has contributed lessons for the NC NIE website; she develops and shares comprehension tests for each week’s Mini Page. Lisa Lord, 5th grade teacher at Club Boulevard Humanities Magnet Elementary School in Durham, was chosen the Dave Jones Award recipient for classroom work during the 2013-2014 school year.
